Kunefe
Warm, Golden, Unforgettable
Crispy shredded pastry, a molten cheese center, drenched in sweet syrup — Turkey's most spectacular dessert.
A Hatay masterpiece
What is Kunefe?
A warm dessert from Turkey's Hatay province — crispy kadayif pastry, stretchy melted cheese, and golden syrup
Born in Hatay
Kunefe (also spelled kunafa or kanafeh) traces its origins to Hatay province in southeastern Turkey, where the blending of Turkish, Arabic, and Levantine cuisines created one of the world's great desserts. The concept is brilliantly simple: shredded kadayif pastry is layered around a special unsalted cheese, cooked until golden and crispy, then soaked in sweet syrup.
The magic is in the contrast. The exterior shatters with crunch, while the interior reveals stretchy, molten cheese. A drizzle of syrup unifies everything with sweetness, and a shower of crushed pistachios adds color and nuttiness. It must be eaten warm — this is a dessert that waits for no one.

Two Ways at Fremont
At Istanbul Mediterranean 2, we offer two kunefe experiences. Our Classic Kunefe ($11.95) is the traditional preparation — golden shredded pastry, melted cheese, and sweet syrup, served warm on a plate. For something extra special, our Kunefe Pistachio ($12.95) adds a generous layer of premium crushed pistachios for added richness and crunch.
Both are prepared to order and served immediately — because kunefe at its best is kunefe at its warmest. Pair it with a Turkish coffee for the perfect ending to your meal.
